2026 is the year of reading, and this weekend we’re celebrating World Book Day with a joyful programme all about the fun of reading and the powerful role books play in children’s lives.
From sparking imagination to building confidence and curiosity, stories help shape how young readers see the world, and we’re inviting families to celebrate the magic of books with us.
We’re hosting a series of free, drop-in events, all taking place throughout the House.
At Little Library Guardians, our knowledgeable Collections team will reveal how we care for and conserve books in the libraries, sharing behind the scenes insights into how stories are protected for future generations.
Young creatives can head to the Servants’ Hall to design and decorate their very own bookmark, perfect for marking the next chapter of a favourite book.
Book lovers can also browse our second-hand pop-up bookshop, a great place to discover a new read or take home a pre-loved story.
And of course, it wouldn’t be World Book Day without a little dressing up! We encourage visitors to come in their favourite book-inspired costumes, and keep an eye out for staff and volunteers joining in the fun too.
Whether you’re a little passionate reader or just beginning your reading journey, it’s a weekend to celebrate stories, creativity, and the simple joy of a good book.
2026 is the National Year of Reading, and Harewood House has pledged support to the Go All In campaign – helping people of all ages discover, rediscover and celebrate a love of reading. You can find out more about the Go All In Campaign here.
