In 1893, at the age of just 13, George ‘Bertie’ Robinson, became the first (and only) Black member of staff to enter service at Harewood House.

May – October 2021

Bertie’s personal story is extraordinary and compelling. Yet it also lays bare the impact of colonialism in the Caribbean post-slavery and attitudes to race in Britain in the early 20th century.

In this exhibition, Harewood House Trust worked with Leeds-based DSRG (the Diasporian Stories Research Group) to bring the story of George ‘Bertie’ Robinson, to life.
