This sculpture depicts the biblical figure Adam, the first man, and is carved out of a single block of alabaster.

The sculpture’s style was influenced by Epstein’s interest in African and Polynesian art.

For many years, Adam was displayed as a curiosity at Louis Tussauds in Blackpool but was rescued by the 7th Earl in the 1960s, whilst producing an exhibition about Epstein for the Edinburgh Festival.

Adam has been displayed in the Hall at Harewood since 1976 and  today stands as a reminder of the Lascelles family’s continued patronage of contemporary artists through the centuries.
