This chair was made by Thomas Chippendale for the Old Library.
It is upholstered in morocco leather, as was traditional for 18th century library chairs.
Chippendale designed the chair frame in a ‘transitional’ style, to reflect the changing fashion from the Rococo to the neo-Classical. The chair has curving cabriole legs and a cartouche-shaped back, but embellished with Classical detailing such as fluting.
This chair is part of a set of eight. Seven were repainted in the 1990s to match the room’s original colour scheme.
