This torchère was made by Thomas Chippendale Junior for the Gallery.
Designed to hold candelabra (as well as other items), this torchère is part of a set of six and would have been integral to the original lighting scheme of the Gallery.
Their large bowl-shaped shades were added in the early 20th century, when the torchères were electrified (converted to electricity).
