This splendid species of terrestrial orchid is one of a number that have been planted in the Himalayan Garden over the past two decades.

It has also proven to be the most reliable; either out performing, or outliving other species of ground-dwelling orchids we have planted.

This species’ natural habitat is temperate forests where it grows on rotten tree trunks and on damp grassy slopes from 1500 – 3000m.

Although not a tough plant, it is fairly hardy and dependable for us, provided it has sharp drainage and is given a mulch of pine needles each winter and a light covering of green conifer twigs as frost protection. Otherwise, they are left to it.

Some of the plants at Harewood are planted beneath conifers, while others are in the rock garden, where they receive partial shade.

These plants also benefit from the cool, moist root run provided by large rocks, which is advantageous during hot, dry summers.
