This Chinese-style clothes press was made by Thomas Chippendale to match the hand-painted Chinese wallpaper now on display in the East Bedroom.

Chinese goods became very fashionable in Europe in the 18th century. Many British craftsmen imitated Chinese design in a style that is today known as ‘chinoiserie’. This piece is ‘japanned’ (painted) to imitate Chinese lacquerware.

This clothes press has a matching commode and pair of night tables, also on display in the East Bedroom.
