Princess Mary was a talented horsewoman and is shown here riding her favourite horse, Portumna.

Here, Sir Alfred Munnings depicts Princess Mary riding through a wooded landscape. The artist felt that this was his greatest ‘plein air’ (painted outdoor) portrait.

The horse Portumna was given to Princess Mary as a wedding present from the Ladies of Ireland. Portumna was named after Portumna Castle in Ireland, inherited by Mary’s husband in 1916.
