It was painted for the Old Library as part of a suite of images designed to compliment the room’s decorative theme of learning and knowledge.
Biagio Rebecca was an Italian artist specialising in decorative interior paintings and frequently collaborated with Robert Adam. This type of picture is known as a ‘grisaille’, a monochrome painting designed to look like plasterwork.
