In 2024, we collaborated with focus groups across Leeds to explore new ways of sharing Black history at Harewood.

We recognised that our new website needed to acknowledge our connections to the Transatlantic Trade in Enslaved People, while also providing inspiring and positive narratives about people with African and Caribbean heritage.

Alexandra, St Matthew’s Church of England Primary School Year 5 teacher and focus group member, volunteered her year group to create some inspiring pieces of work on their chosen Black role model, under the theme of our Missing Portraits series.

Missing Portraits was set up by the Earl and Countess of Harewood to diversify our portrait collection and share uplifting stories about people of African/Caribbean heritage with connections to Harewood.

St Matthew’s Church of England Primary School was asked the following question:
